MPL Entertainment, Organizer of 'RESPECT Festival', Files for Simplified Rehabilitation

[비즈한국] It has been confirmed that concert production company MPL Entertainment has filed for simplified rehabilitation. MPL Entertainment is the organizer of large-scale music festivals such as the 'Tone & Music Festival' and the 'RESPECT Festival'. With a relatively well-known company in the music performance industry filing for simplified rehabilitation, pessimistic outlooks regarding the music festival business are emerging.

MPL Entertainment recently filed for simplified rehabilitation with the Seoul Bankruptcy Court. A simplified rehabilitation process is applicable rather than general rehabilitation when a corporation's total debt is 5 billion KRW or less. On January 8, the Seoul Bankruptcy Court issued a comprehensive injunction against MPL Entertainment. A corporation subject to a comprehensive injunction is prohibited from compulsory execution, provisional seizure, or provisional disposition by creditors until the rehabilitation procedure is decided.

MPL Entertainment is a concert production company that hosted large music festivals such as the 'Tone & Music Festival' and the 'RESPECT Festival'. In particular, the RESPECT Festival is considered a long-running event, having been held since 2016. The Tone & Music Festival was first introduced in 2023 and gained significant popularity with appearances by famous artists such as Dynamic Duo and Jay Park.

However, the recent atmosphere has been unfavorable. The 2024 RESPECT Festival was cancelled due to budget issues. Neither the Tone & Music Festival nor the RESPECT Festival were held in 2025. Recently, MPL Entertainment appears to be focusing on organizing solo artist concerts rather than large-scale music festivals.

It is known that most music festivals either record deficits or fail to generate significant profits even when they are in the black. A key reason cited is the rise in artist appearance fees due to the increase in the number of music festivals. For example, GS Retail007070 did not hold its 'Music & Beer Festival (MU:BE)' last year, citing cost burdens. This event began in 2015 and was held every year, except during the COVID-19 pandemic period from 2020 to 2021.

In this situation, as MPL Entertainment enters simplified rehabilitation, pessimistic outlooks for the music festival industry are growing. A source in the performance industry said, "Even with just the basics, music festival tickets cost hundreds of thousands of won, which can be a burden for general audiences," adding, "Artists with guaranteed box-office success tend to prefer solo concerts over music festivals, and even if they are willing to appear, it would be difficult for companies other than large agencies to afford their appearance fees."
