Still a year left in term… Curiosity surrounds H-Line Shipping’s change in leadership

[비즈한국] It has been confirmed that H-Line Shipping recently changed its Representative Executive Officer. CEO Seo Myeong-deuk, who previously held the position, has resigned, and Executive Vice President Seo Ho-dong has been appointed as the new Representative Executive Officer. Since CEO Seo Myeong-deuk had been actively involved until very recently, the shipping industry is focusing its attention on the background behind his resignation.

H-Line Shipping is a shipping company established by Hahn & Company in June 2014 through the acquisition of Hanjin Shipping’s bulk carrier division. Two years later, in 2016, Hahn & Company acquired the bulk carrier division of Hyundai Merchant Marine and merged it into H-Line Shipping.

H-Line Shipping employs an executive officer system. While a standard corporate board of directors combines business execution and supervision, under the executive officer system, executive officers manage the company according to board policies, and the board oversees their work. Among the executive officers, the person representing the company acts as the Representative Executive Officer, possessing authority similar to that of a CEO, including signing contracts and handling litigation.

The recent change in H-Line Shipping's Representative Executive Officer has drawn attention. The role transitioned from CEO Seo Myeong-deuk to Executive Vice President Seo Ho-dong on January 2, 2024, despite CEO Seo Myeong-deuk having more than a year left in his term, which was set to end in March 2027.

H-Line Shipping recently relocated its headquarters from Seoul to Busan. It is reported that the company expected synergy effects following the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' relocation to Busan and the development of the southeastern region into a new maritime capital.

The person who spearheaded H-Line Shipping's headquarters relocation was none other than CEO Seo Myeong-deuk. At a press conference last December, CEO Seo stated, "This is a strategic shift to make decisions and execute them faster and more accurately amidst the changing global competitive landscape," adding, "We will work closely with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to create an employment and investment ecosystem that thrives with the Busan region, and we will leap forward as a global maritime and logistics leader based in Busan."

Why did CEO Seo Myeong-deuk, who was so actively involved, suddenly resign? Bizhankook reached out to H-Line Shipping to ask about the reason for the replacement of the Representative Executive Officer but did not receive a response.

The newly appointed Representative Executive Officer, Seo Ho-dong, previously served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of H-Line Shipping. The COO position is responsible for overseeing company operations and is generally considered the second-in-command after the CEO. When H-Line Shipping signed a strategic business agreement with HD Hyundai last July for the 'joint development of AI-based autonomous and eco-friendly ship technology,' it was Executive Vice President Seo Ho-dong who attended as the company representative.

The road ahead for new H-Line Shipping Representative Executive Officer Seo Ho-dong is not entirely bright. The overall state of the shipping industry is struggling. The revenue of Korea's leading shipping company, HMM011200, fell 4.23% from 8.5453 trillion won in the first three quarters of 2024 to 8.1838 trillion won in the first three quarters of 2025. On the 15th, Park Jung-seok, Chairman of the Korea Shipowners' Association, stated at a regular general meeting, "The shipping industry is expected to face increased burdens due to persistent supply chain uncertainties, entrenched U.S.-China conflicts, and a supply glut caused by the mass delivery of new ships." All eyes in the shipping industry are on whether Executive Vice President Seo Ho-dong can overcome these concerns and succeed in improving performance.
