Analysts suggest this appointment is a strategic move that goes beyond simple talent acquisition, aiming to accelerate the software-centric transformation currently being pursued by Hyundai Motor005380.
Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 13th that it has appointed Dr. Min-woo Park (49), an expert in autonomous driving technology, as the head of its Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) division and CEO of 42dot. This comes about a month after former head Song Chang-hyeon announced his resignation for personal reasons.
New President Park is a technical leader who has experienced the entire process of research, development, mass production, and commercialization in the field of computer vision-based autonomous driving at companies like Tesla and NVIDIA. Park majored in Electrical, Electronic, and Radio Engineering at Korea University, and received his master's degree in Electrical Engineering and his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.
Most recently, as a Vice President at NVIDIA, he reportedly joined the team developing autonomous driving perception technology and led the mass production and commercialization of autonomous driving software. He is particularly recognized for leading the organization dedicated to perception and sensor fusion technology, successfully promoting the application of NVIDIA's autonomous driving platform to vehicles. During his tenure at Tesla, he was said to have participated in the design and development of its driver-assist software, Autopilot.
Analysts believe this appointment reflects the intentions of Executive Chair Euisun Chung, who held a private meeting with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang at this year's CES. At CES 2026, CEO Huang unveiled the autonomous driving platform 'AlphaMayo' and declared that “the era of ChatGPT for physical AI has arrived.” Hyundai Motor Group intends to accelerate the development and commercialization of Software Defined Vehicles (SDV) and autonomous driving technology through the recruitment of President Park.
Through this recruitment, Hyundai Motor Group plans to accelerate the development and commercialization of vehicle software technology across all areas of SDV and autonomous driving, while also speeding up the integration of autonomous driving and mobility technologies and the execution of its SDV strategy.
The industry expects that with the arrival of a leader who previously headed NVIDIA's automotive division, Hyundai Motor's next-generation autonomous driving platform development and optimization efforts will gain momentum.
Rather than following a fully independent, Tesla-style path, Hyundai Motor is considering the adoption of NVIDIA's AlphaMayo, with analysis suggesting a focus on internalizing core technologies through optimization tailored to vehicle characteristics and mass production/safety regulations. AlphaMayo is based on 'VLA (Vision-Language-Action) models,' which go beyond existing simple reactive AI by being able to reason about situations and explain the reasoning behind their judgments.
Many believe that this recruitment could lead to an earlier-than-expected launch of Hyundai's next-generation autonomous driving system. As global automakers stake everything on their transition to SDV, the addition of a leader with extensive practical experience from NVIDIA is expected to further boost the performance of Hyundai's 'AI brain.'
