[비즈한국] Renault Korea has unveiled its new global flagship crossover model, 'Philanthe.' Currently, Renault Korea only sells three vehicles in the domestic market: the 'Grand Koleos,' 'Arkana,' and 'Scenic.' Among these, the Grand Koleos accounts for nearly 80% of Renault Korea's total domestic sales. Renault Korea's recent rise in sales is also due to the success of the Grand Koleos. Conversely, a decline in the popularity of the Grand Koleos would negatively impact Renault Korea's overall sales volume. For Renault Korea, a change in its sales structure, which is currently focused solely on the Grand Koleos, is necessary. The automotive industry is focused on whether the Philanthe can inject new vitality into Renault Korea. Bizhankook visited the Philanthe unveiling event on the 13th to assess its chances of success.

Renault Korea unveiled its new car, the 'Philanthe,' at a 'World Premiere' event on the 13th. Renault Korea plans to release the Philanthe to the domestic market in March of this year (the Techno trim will be available in the third quarter). Renault Korea introduced the Philanthe as a “new flagship crossover model that blurs the boundaries between a sedan and an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle).” If the Philanthe performs well in the domestic market, Renault Korea is expected to shed the criticism of being a 'one-hit wonder' with the Grand Koleos.
Renault Korea has high expectations for the Philanthe. Nicolas Paris, CEO of Renault Korea, expressed his anticipation, stating, “The Philanthe is a groundbreaking and bold crossover vehicle that encapsulates Renault’s technological flagship status and the ‘Human First’ philosophy that has undergone constant innovation,” adding, “It will play a role in meeting the high expectations of Korean consumers while further strengthening the premium value of the Renault brand in the global market.”
Competitors for the Philanthe include Hyundai Motor Company's005380 Palisade and Santa Fe, and Kia's000270 Sorento. According to Hyundai Motor Group, domestic sales of the Palisade increased from 20,967 units in 2024 to 60,909 units in 2025, while sales of the Sorento increased from 94,538 to 100,002 units during the same period. Santa Fe sales decreased from 77,161 to 57,889 units.
Judging by the explosive growth of the Palisade last year, it is expected that there will be a certain level of demand for the Philanthe. The key will be how well the Philanthe performs amidst the competition with Hyundai Motor Group.
Renault Korea emphasizes the Philanthe's unconventional design. An official from the automotive industry assessed, “Recently, there isn't much difference in performance between car manufacturers that the average consumer can feel,” and added, “Ultimately, to capture consumers, design, additional features, and other services will have a major impact.” The Philanthe’s emphasis on design is interpreted as a reflection of this trend.

The front design of the Philanthe centers on the ‘Illuminated Signature Lozenge Logo’ and ‘Grille Lighting,’ with the upper part finished in the same color as the car body and the lower part in glossy black. The rear features a three-dimensional design reminiscent of a coupe.
The dimensions of the Philanthe are 4,915 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height. It is larger but lower than a typical crossover. The interior of the Philanthe has a wheelbase of 2,820 mm, with 320 mm of knee room and 866 mm of headroom in the rear seats. Applying the panoramic glass roof increases the headroom to 874 mm. The trunk space is 633L, which expands to 2,050L when the rear seats are folded. It is also notable that eco-friendly Nappa artificial leather is applied to all Philanthe trims.
The Philanthe is equipped with a parallel-series dual-motor hybrid system. According to Renault Korea, it is an upgraded version of the hybrid system used in the Grand Koleos. The hybrid E-Tech powertrain applied to the Philanthe combines a 100kW drive motor and a 60kW starter motor with a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine to produce 250 horsepower. The engine’s maximum torque is 25.5 kg·m. The Philanthe’s official combined fuel efficiency is 15.1 km/L. Compared to the Palisade’s fuel efficiency of 8.2–9.7 km/L, it is competitive. It is also ahead of the Sorento (9.3–14.3 km/L) and the Santa Fe (9.7–11 km/L).
While the evaluation of the Philanthe is not bad, there is no guarantee that it will win in the competition against Hyundai Motor Group. This is because Hyundai Motor Company’s customer service is evaluated as the best among domestic automakers. Hyundai Motor operates 'Hyundai Bluehands,' which provides vehicle maintenance services throughout the country. Although Renault Korea also has service corners nationwide, they are considered to have weaker scale and infrastructure compared to Bluehands. For this reason, it is known that quite a few customers choose Hyundai Motor for easy maintenance and after-sales service (AS).
In response, Renault Korea announced that it is preparing a 'Remote Diagnostic Service' for Philanthe buyers. When a customer requests a vehicle check via an app, the Renault Korea service network remotely analyzes vehicle data to diagnose problems and explains the results through customer consultation. In addition, it plans to provide free engine oil sets, cabin air filter replacements, and premium vehicle inspections three times within 3 years or 45,000 km of driving after purchasing the Philanthe.
For Renault Korea, the success of the Philanthe is necessary to shed the criticism of being a 'one-hit wonder' with the Grand Koleos. Renault Korea sold a total of 52,271 units in the domestic market last year. This is a 31.28% increase compared to the 39,816 units sold in 2024. This increase in sales is due to the success of Renault Korea’s mid-sized SUV, the Grand Koleos. Sales of the Grand Koleos increased from 22,034 in 2024 to 40,877 in 2025. Renault Korea itself stated when announcing its performance last year, “The Grand Koleos led Renault Korea’s annual domestic performance.”
Looking at Renault Korea’s domestic sales in detail last year, it recorded △40,877 for the Grand Koleos △5,562 for the Arkana △642 for the Scenic. The Grand Koleos accounted for 78.20% of Renault Korea’s total domestic sales last year. It is evaluated that the dependence on the Grand Koleos has increased as Renault Korea discontinued the SM6 last year. Conversely, it is a structure where a drop in the popularity of the Grand Koleos could have a significant impact on Renault Korea’s total sales. In this situation, if the Philanthe shows high sales, it can offset poor performance of the Grand Koleos.
The price of the Philanthe, based on the individual consumption tax reduction and eco-friendly vehicle tax benefits, is △43,319,000 KRW for Techno, △46,969,000 KRW for Iconic, and △49,719,000 KRW for Esprit Alpine. In addition, the limited edition 'Esprit Alpine 1995' is priced at 52,189,000 KRW. However, as of the 13th, the Philanthe is in the process of government approval for eco-friendly vehicle status, and eco-friendly vehicle tax benefits will be applied upon completion of approval.
